7 cases 23,733 detonators could have been taken without using
an instrument of any kind.
It is very difficult at this stage to form an opinion.
as to time of occurrence or likely perpetrators; but I am of the
opinion that it was done by persons who knew that No.5 magazine
contained detonators and also knew that inside the cases were
smaller ones and that the persons thought they would be able to
get the complete inside case through the apperture made between
the bars, and on finding out their mistake they took the lids off
and passed the packets through.
When Police arrived on the scene the outside cases were
in the centre of the magazine, the inside cases on the inside
under the window with three of the lids of the inside cases on
the window sill outside and one inside. One practically new
hack saw blade and two pieces of another blade were found by
police on the ground outside under the window. No fingerprints
had been left.
Three Indian Special Guards under a Regular Indian
Police Officer do duty at the depot 4 hours on and 8 off. It
seems rather strange that P.S.B.45 SHER ALI SHAH should go sick
and be admitted to the G.C.H. on the morning of 2.8.35.
It may
be that the bars were cut through a day or so before the actual
breaking took place and that the Indian Sergeant knew of this.
There are also 8 seamen of the Harbour Department
stationed on the Island and work in and around the depot.

As is known there is not a light in the depot and the
Indian on night duty has to rely on an electric torch to carry
out his important duty. In addition to carrying his torch he
has to carry a verey pistol and 12 verey lights and a revolver
and 24 rounds on his belt. There is no place to put the verey
lihts and pistol and he has to carry them around with him in his
